RNO Announces Tenth Grand Festival

RNO Announces Tenth Grand Festival

The RNO has announced the lineup for its Tenth Grand Festival, featuring a star-studded cast of international soloists and conductors performing with the Russian National Orchestra. The six concerts will take place from September 10 to October 4, in Moscow's Tchaikovsky Concert Hall.

Among the festival's featured soloists are: Frank Peter Zimmerman, Violin; Vadim Repin, Violin; Angela Gheorghiu, Soprano; Stephen Chaundy, Tenor; Jennifer O'Loughlin, Soprano; Morten Frank Larsen, Baritone; Kim Criswell, Mezzo-soprano; Yaroslav Petryanik, Baritone; Elena Gorlo, Mezzo-soprano; Ilya Selivanov, Tenor; Boris Rudak, Tenor; Denis Begansky, Bass-baritone; Dinar Dzhusoev, Bass; Alexander Oleshko, Narrator; Alexander Buzlov, Cello; and the Russian Soul Folk Quartet.

Four of the concerts will be conducted by the orchestra's founder and artistic director, Mikhail Pletnev. Guest conductors Charles Olivieri-Munroe and Joseph R. Olefirowicz will each lead one concert.

One of the most significant events of the festival will be the concert performance of Leonard Bernstein's Candide, as this year is the centenary of the great American composer's birth. And it is not the first Bernstein work to be performed by the RNO during its annual festival. In 2011, the RNO was widely acclaimed for its Russian premiere of Bernstein's Symphony No. 3: Kadish.

The performance of Candide will be led by the charismatic American conductor, Joseph Olefirowicz, who became an internet sensation a few years ago. His lively conducting style, caught on hidden camera, earned him the moniker "the dancing conductor."
