Pletnev Awarded High Honor

On March 28, 2019, by decree of the Russian President, RNO Founder and Artistic Director Mikhail Pletnev was awarded one of the country’s highest civilian honors, the Medal of the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland", Second Degree. The presidential decree stated that the medal was awarded to Pletnev for his “outstanding contributions in the development of the country’s culture and arts,” and “for many years of productive activity.”

By the same decree, RNO principal violist Sergei Dubov was awarded the title Distinguished Artist of the Russian Federation, one of the highest honors for artistic achievement in Russia. Dubov joins nine other RNO musicians who have previously received this award. In addition, three RNO musicians - concertmaster Alexei Bruni, double bassist Rustem Gabdullin, and clarinetist Nikolai Mozgovenko - have previously received Russia’s highest artistic honor, People’s Artist of Russia. Pletnev also received this honor, in 1989, one year before founding the RNO. Although only a handful of artists receive these meritorious distinctions each year, the awards have been bestowed upon nearly every principal musician in the Russian National Orchestra.
